After moving to 311 7th Street, a major church improvement
was to make the church handicapped assessable. After many
months the WOMEN of the church built a ramp that was
completed in June 2001.
A Forms and Structure Committee was formed with Steve B.,
Ann W., Steve L., and Leila, C. serving on the committee.
This committee served to work on the technical matters
pertaining to MCC Augusta obtaining Commissioned Status
through the UFMCC. In the fall of 2000, the Metropolitan
Community Church of Augusta officially changed its name to
the Metropolitan Community Church of Our Redeemer.
In January 2001, the church had increasing attendance at the AM and PM worship services. The choir had twelve members. A church directory of members was established with Maxx K and Cheryl working on the project.
In April 2001, Ann W. presented the new set of by-laws for MCCOR. The Denomination of UFMCC began the process of rezoning and redesign for the whole Denomination. The Districts that we had for years were to be changed to Regions that spanned different continents. We are now a part of Region Two instead of the GLAD District.
An E-Letter was started in 2001. Also there were new committees started i.e. Congregational care, discipleship, outreach, worship etc. MCCOR also experienced a break in at the church. There were many social events in 2001 under the leadership of Mike M.. At the fall District Conference MCCOR was granted the status of a Commissioned Church. A web site was formed and by March 2002 the site had had 1564 hits... MCCOR was making an effort to be known in the community.
Our membership was up to 73 in April 2002. Congregational Care was meeting every other week to send cards to persons who were not in attendance. A health fair was held in Sept. HIV testing, PSA testing, Blood pressure, glucose and Lipid panels were a few of the booths at the fair. MCG sent a team to do HIV teaching and we had a great turnout.
Our choir, lead by our music minister, Phillip S., sang at the Easter Sunrise Service for the Downtown Churches at the Jessie Norman Amphitheater. Over 100 people attended Easter Service at MCCOR. Bernie C. provided piano accompaniment until his death.
The women’s softball team had an undefeated season. Painting the exterior of the building and increase in the children’s education were highlights of the year. Church brochures were mailed to 35 schools or agencies in the CSRA. The property search committee started looking for property to purchase.
Lisa H. and the outreach team worked on many projects during the year, i.e. Paws to Care, nursing home care, National Coming Out Day, Blessing of the Animals, school supplies for the school children and the softball team. Noelle, R, and Mildred N. hosted a three month “Bible” study at their home in North Augusta.
A Capital Campaign committee was formed and a kickoff dinner was held on January 11, 2003. We had great entertainment for some of our local “ladies”. Our comfortable “plum” chairs were donated to the church by individuals to help with the seating in our sanctuary.
Terry P. agreed to oversee the physical property of the tentative “new“ worship space. Closing on the new space located at 557 Greene Street was done on September 29, 2003, at 3 PM.
Editor’s Note: Much Thanks to Sandra for taking the time to go through board minutes and other MCCOR records to compile the MCCOR History pieces. For many of us who were not there for the “beginning” it has be enlightening to have a peek at that beginning in the Augusta area. Thanks Sandra!
